Introducing Our Bags for Good: What You Need to Know
In one of many small steps to make a difference, we have designed our Bags for Good collection.
Our Bags for Good collection is made entirely from recycled polyester (polyethylene terephthalate) or rPET for short. rPET is super lightweight, durable, water-resistant, and great at taking colour and print for our bags.
Most of our recycled polyester comes from pre-consumer waste, i.e. faulty or surplus plastic from manufacturing that would otherwise go to waste.
Why Recycled Polyester?
- Lessens the dependence on fossil fuels like petroleum, as a raw material to make virgin polyester. Which in turn reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
- Utilises waste materials that might otherwise end up on a landfill.
- The manufacturing process of creating rPET uses 79% less carbon emissions than producing virgin polyester.
- There is no difference between virgin polyester and recycled polyester in terms of performance.
Our partnership with Trees For Cities
For every bag and accessory bought from the Bags for Good collection, we will donate a portion of the proceeds to Trees for Cities.
Set up in 1993, Trees for Cities is the only UK charity working at a national and international scale to improve lives by planting trees in cities. We are passionate about supporting a local London based charity in order to support their environmental work, both in London, across the UK and the rest of the world.
With nearly 1.3 million trees planted to date, they aim to plant another 167,000+ this year alone, to make our urban spaces greener and healthier for everyone.
Our Bags for Good collection has been approved by the Global Recycled Standards agency. Global Recycled Standard (GRS) are international, voluntary standards that set requirements for third-party certification of recycled input and chain of custody. The shared goal of the standards is to increase the use of recycled materials. The GRS includes additional criteria for social and environmental processing requirements and chemical restrictions.
We hope you cherish your Bags for Good for many years to come - not only are you giving a new life to otherwise wasted plastic, but you're doing so in nostalgic Orla Kiely prints that never go out of style. It's a win, win.
